The Grundy County Health Department is inviting community members to improve their health and well-being by participating in a new beginner's Tai Chi for Health class starting this fall.

An informational meeting and demonstration will be held from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, at the Grundy County Health Department Annex (1307 E. 17th Street). The meeting will introduce participants to the program, explain what to expect during class, and answer questions.

The class is free and will be held from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, beginning September 15 and continuing through December 15. Classes will be led by certified Tai Chi instructors Elizabeth Gibson and Val Kirby.

Tai chi is a gentle form of exercise that combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing and balance training. Research has shown that tai chi can help improve balance and flexibility, increase strength, reduce stress, improve posture, and lower the risk of falls. Tai chi is appropriate for people of many ages and fitness levels, including those who are new to exercise.

“Tai chi is a simple, low-impact activity that offers physical and mental health benefits,” said Gibson. “Whether your goal is to improve your balance, become more active, reduce stress, or simply try something new, this class provides a welcoming environment for beginners to learn at a comfortable pace.”

Registration is not required. However, regular attendance is encouraged because each class builds on skills and movements learned during previous sessions.
